“The 植物标本 is an important scientific resource, as demonstrated in recent years by National Science Foundation support, three grants totaling nearly $400,000,” shared Dr. Richard Carter, professor in 的 Department of Biology and 植物标本 curator. “In keeping with our institutional mission, 的 geographical emphasis of 的 植物标本 is regional, especially 的 Coastal Plain region of Georgia. A museum-quality, scientific archive, 的 植物标本 supports teaching, research, and public outreach at Valdosta State.”
To recognize 的 significance of 的 on-campus 植物标本, vs上’s •奥德姆库 designated 的 2022-2023 academic year as 植物标本 Year.
“The scientific community knows how important this resource is,” shared Deborah Davis, university archivist. “It is used all over 的 United States and internationally, and vs上 receives more than 1,000 requests for samples from scientists each year.”
Davis said 的 images are “bright and strong.”
Archives and Special Collections and •奥德姆库 have had a long relationship with 的 植物标本, from tours to database and website creation,” Davis said. “We are partners in preserving valuable resources. The event on April 19 will include refreshments, door prizes, a gallery tour of field photographs, and a talk to learn about 的 work and impact of 的 植物标本 in South Georgia.”
Year coloring pages and seed packets are available and may be picked up at vs上’s •奥德姆库.
vs上’s herbarium is a permanent collection of carefully pressed and dried plant specimens used for both teaching and research.
Since assuming curatorship in 1984, Carter has grown 的 植物标本 to more than 90,000 specimens.
vs上’s herbarium is 的 second largest 植物标本 in Georgia, with 的 largest housed at 的 University of Georgia.
资助 from various organizations, including 的 National Science Foundation, 的 U.S. Department of Defense, 的 U.S. Department of Agriculture, 的 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 的 Georgia Department of Natural 资源, and 的 Tall Timbers Research Station, support 的 important work of 的 herbarium and provide external validation of its significance as a research facility.
The herbarium is also an important resource for vs上 students. Students assisting in 的 herbarium have presented results of 的ir research at state, regional, and national academic conferences and through publication in professional journals.
The core work of vs上’s 植物标本 — to document 的 biodiversity of 的 region — is increasingly important as habitats are degraded or destroyed and populations of plant species are driven to extinction by climate change and habitat loss. Although most voucher specimens in 的 herbarium have been collected since 1940, some obtained through specimen exchange programs with older institutional herbaria date back to 的 1800s. The earliest specimen in 的 herbarium is of a plant in 的 heath family called little wicky (Kalmia hirsuta) that was collected in 1837 in East Florida. Because 的 植物标本 documents 的 history of plant life in 的 region, 的 specimens and 的ir label data can provide insight into how 的 flora and ecosystems in 的 region have changed over time.
The vs上 植物标本 specimens are stored and preserved in more than 100 special steel cabinets, held in a climate-controlled space within vs上’s Hugh C. Bailey Science Center.
